Laser eye surgery: What you should know before you get one

from:

Laser eye surgery has recently become one of the most popular and effective ways to treat eye problems especially nearsightedness and farsightedness. Although considered quite safe, patients still need to know a few things about the procedure before they have it done on their eyes.

Different types of laser eye surgeries

One of the most common types of laser eye surgery is lasik or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, which was introduced in 1996. Since then, more than five million lasik procedures have been performed in the country. In 2005, there are more than a million people who had lasik surgery done for their eyes. Because of its immense popularity, most Americans think that lasik surgery is the only option that they have when it comes to eye problems. This however is not the case.

There are a lot of laser surgical procedures that can be done. One option is the Lasek surgery or the Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis. This is a procedure that involves the same process as Lasik except that surgeons will cut a flap in the part of the epithelium instead of the stroma. One disadvantage of this procedure is the fact that it can be extremely painful especially with the use of alcohol.

Another kind of laser eye surgery that can be done to your eyes is the epithelial lasik surgery. This is a cross between the lasik and the lasek procedures. In epithelial lasik surgery, a plastic blade called the epikeratome is used to separate the epithelial skin. Many patient prefer this from lasek surgery because it involves less pain.

Surgeon

Although laser eye surgery is already an established procedure, safety and effectiveness will still depend on the doctor that will handle your case. It is important therefore to find a doctor that is well qualified to take care of your eyes. One of the first things that you should look for is the credential and the permit to perform the procedure. Although basically all surgical doctors that deal with eye problems can handle the case, it is still safer to have it done by doctors that are already experienced in the procedure. They should also have undergone some sort of training with the procedure.

Costs

Laser eye surgery is not cheap. If you feel that you still do not have the money to spare, better stick to your contact lenses or glasses first. This is much more preferable than availing of a service for a cheap price even if the surgeon is not as qualified. DO NOT sacrifice quality for cost as this can be pretty dangerous.

Risks

Laser eye surgery is very effective but like every surgical procedure, it is not without risks. Accidents happen and complications do happen. There are cases when eye problems become even worse than its condition before the surgery. Although it is normal for patients to suffer from hallucination-like visions as well as double visions are the first few weeks after recovery, there are also cases when these conditions persist over time. When these happen, it is important that you go to your doctor and have your condition treated. Oftentimes, patients will also suffer from drying eyes, itchy eyes or may feel some slight discomfort in the eye, as if there is a foreign object caught in the eye.
