Laser Eye Surgery Information

from:

People who are tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses don’t have to fret any longer. Modern medicine has given the patient the opportunity to see again without the use of seeing aids.

Unfortunately, not everybody can qualify for this type of procedure. The doctors will screen the person first before proceeding any further.

Here are some things that will automatically determine if the person is qualified to undergo laser surgery. The patient should be 18 year and over whose prescription or grade given in the glasses is stable.

The person should neither have any disease such as diabetes, uncontrolled rheumatic conditions nor has a family history of keratoconus.

The problem why a lot of people can’t see clearly various distances or have astigmatism is because of an irregular shape in the cornea.

This can be corrected by various techniques in laser surgery and one of the most preferred by doctors is LASIK. This stands for laser in situ keratomileusis. Doctors will reshape the cornea by making a small incision and using laser to correct the problem.

Another method is called refractive keratotomy or PRK. It is very similar to LASIK but the only problem is, this takes a longer time to heal before the person can resume a normal life again.

Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis or LASEK for short is another type of surgery. The doctor will cut a small version on the lining just in front of the cornea. This is often used to treat other kinds of abnormalities in the eye and not just limited to astigmatism, near or farsightedness.

People who will undergo laser eye surgery should realize these procedures are expensive.

The latest consumer survey showed doctors charged an average of $1965 per eye. This doesn’t yet include the fees for the use of the operating room, the anesthesia and the other things before and after the operation takes place.

This is also not covered by insurance so the person should save a lot of cash before this is done.

The doctor should also inform the patient of the risks in this type of surgery. Though the chances of complications are very minimal, these are still things that the person should be aware of.

The person will be experienced some discomfort after the operation which is usually itchiness in the eye. The doctor can recommend an ointment to stop this and have the patient continue to use an eye shield which is placed over the eye after the operation until this goes away.

Some people think that people who undergo laser surgery no longer have to wear glasses or contact lenses. There are some cases that the patient will still have to wear these aids usually until the age of 45.

Correcting the person’s may over in a few seconds but many consider this to be a work in progress. This is because some patients will have to visit the clinic to check how the eye is doing after the surgery while there are those who have to go in the operation room again.

People who are not able to see well have two options. The first will be to wear eyeglasses and contact lenses for the rest of the person’s life or undergo laser eye surgery to be able to have 20/20 vision or better again.
