The Cost of Laser Eye Surgery

If the vision of an individual isn’t that good, doctors have no choice but to require the person to wear glasses. This can happen at a young age while there are those who use this later on in life.
As the grade of the eyes increase, the thicker the lenses become. The person will then have the choice to continue using eye glasses or use contact lenses.
Fortunately, modern medicine has allowed the patient to get some good eyesight again. There are many procedures and one of the common ones to date is known as refractive eye surgery. This can work for anyone who is near or farsighted or has astigmatism.
Another method using lasers is called PRK or precision surgery. The patient is given some anesthetic eye drops then a laser will be placed over the eye to remove minute amounts of tissue which hinders the person’s sight. The procedure takes a few minutes and the person can go back to work in as fast as three days.
How much does laser eye surgery cost? The answer is very vague and people charge by the eye. In 2002, the cost per eye was $1600. This jumped more than $200 in a span of two years. The most recent consumer survey showed that this has already reached $1965 at the end of 2005.
The person doesn’t only pay for the services of the doctor but also the use of the facilities and other tests that need to be done before the procedure takes place, the royalty fee for the equipment used and insurance.
Some people who think of having laser surgery back out in the last minute. These people can afford the procedure but are scared of the pain that may happen as the eyes are openly looking at laser.
Doctor’s guarantee that no pain is felt after the anesthesia has taken effect. The person might feel some itchiness and difficulty looking at light but this is normal since the vision will come back in a few hours or days.
Are there any side effects? There have been no reported cases of side effects from any patient who has undergone this type of surgery. Though some people claim to see glares when there is light around that occurs only during the evening.
Surgery is done under less than a minute. The person can come in the clinic in the morning and be released before lunch.
When the patient is on the operating table, the laser is targeted on the eye. Should the individual move, the doctor will stop the laser and readjust before proceeding with the operation.
Laser eye surgery is expensive and people who have this may have to come back again years later should the grade change again. The most important thing one should avoid doing after the operation is rubbing the eye.
The person will still have to visit the doctor even after the operation is over. This is to monitor if the vision has improved which is a good indication that the procedure was a success.
