The Good and the Bad of Laser Eye Surgery
from:Many years ago, people who had poor vision had no choice but to wear eyeglasses. Later on, doctors invented contact lenses so that individuals who needed eye accessories could go around like normal people.
Those days are gone now since there is a better but expensive way of treating this problem which is through laser eye surgery. The most common type preferred by doctors and patients is known as LASIK or laser eye surgery in situ Keratomileusis.
This procedure will help people who have astigmatism, near or farsightedness. There are hundreds of patients who have this operation done every year. The person has to realize there are risks involved in having this done.
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), 7 out of every 10 patients will be able to achieve 20/20 vision or better but there will be some who will not be that lucky.
There will be some people who will experience distorted or blurred vision often called irregular astigmatism. Others will notice that the eyesight will deteriorate which doctor’s term as serious dry-eye syndrome which only became worse as a result of the operation.
People who have this syndrome have to put artificial tears on the eye a number of times in a day. This also needs to be done at night. People who undergo surgery have to do this for 2 weeks but those who experienced a complication have to do this for the rest of the person’s life.
There are also other problems that may happen;
• These are over or under correction which means the person still has to wearing those eye glasses or contact lenses after the operation.
• If the surgeon didn’t do a good job, those who still can’t see well can no longer wear contact lenses.
• Some patients have also complained of corneal infection.
• A reduction in contrast sensitivity or sharpness so despite the fact that the patient has 20/20 vision, some objects may still seem blurred or fuzzy similar to what sometimes happens on the television.
• Surgery may have also impaired the person’s vision to see well at night so glasses have to born especially when driving.
• LASIK requires the doctors to take away certain tissues and if the flaps are not taken cared of, this may also cause problems with the person’s vision.
Despite the risks, people are more optimistic of the results such as better vision and throwing away those glasses or contact lenses. The procedure may be done on just one eye but in most cases, for both.
The odds of a successful surgery outweigh the bad results. In fact, there are only who experience complications. LASIK surgery or any other form cannot be reversed. This means the patient has to think hard before going through with it.
The best way to ensure a successful operation will be to get a reputable and trusted surgeon to do the job. The person can check various websites, contact local clinics and ask patients who have better vision.
Even though laser eye surgery will only last a few seconds, anyone who wants to undergo should look at the good and bad effects of the operation. This procedure after all is permanent and this could mean the difference of seeing things better with or without the use of other accessories.
