Laser Eye Surgery: the kinds, the good and the bad, the complications

from:

Laser eye surgery is one of the most common ways to treat eye problems such as nearsightedness and farsightedness. In recent years , it has even gained popularity as lasik and lasek procedures become established. Lasik is short for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. This is a procedure that uses laser to change the shape of the cornea. By doing this, eye sight may be restored or treated.

Lasek, on the other hand, means Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis. This is a procedure that is much similar with the lasik except that instead of cutting into the stroma, surgeons cut through the epithelial layer. Lasek is considered by many as more painful. Its recovery time is longer.

Perhaps what is most advantageous with the procedure is the fact that it can be done in less than a minute and is virtually painless. Because it is computer-guided, errors are much more minimal. Lasik, for instance, provides corneal stability and a small percentage of regression to nearsightedness. Lasek surgery on the other hand is known to be also effective especially in treating eye problems. It is said to be much safer although more painful.

Despite the excellent credentials of both lasik and lasek eye surgery, complications do arise during and after the procedure. There is really no avoiding it as situations like this happen to the best of ‘em. The rate of complication in fact has gone down from the figures recorded in the 1990s, which places the rate at about five percent. Because of the refining of the technique and the new technology that is being discovered everyday, the rate has gone down to just below one percent. This is good news for people who are absolutely tired of using their eyeglass but are afraid of the complications that may arise should they undergo laser surgery.

And they do have something to be afraid of. Although quite rare, one of the most chilling complication of laser eye surgery is getting an even worse “sight” that no contact lens and glasses can correct. This means that if your sight is blurred after the surgery and it has not cleared up, chances are your sight will be blurred for the rest of your life. Lenses will not be able to help you.

Another complication that may arise is the appearance of hallucinatory-like visions on the eye treated with laser eye surgery. Often, the patient will see a white circular structure that most call a white halo effect. Other times, they will see double or even triple images.

Although it is considered quite normal to have dry eyes after the surgery, for some patients, these conditions persist. If this happens, it is recommended that you visit your doctor for a check-up. Your eye may need another treatment.

Others may feel some slight discomfort in the eye, as though there is a foreign object that is lodged somewhere in the eyes. Some people even feel pain in the eyes. This condition is often called the Sands of Sahara or known in scientific community as Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis (DLK). This is brought on by the gathering of dead cells in the lasik flap that was created. When the cornea reacts with these dead cells, inflammation may arise. Thus, the feeling of fullness and pain.
