Risks of liposuction procedures classified

One of the most popular ways to quickly lose weight is liposuction, a procedure that involves the removal of fat deposits in certain areas of the body through suction. Most medical professionals that perform the surgery use a hollow pen-like instrument called a canula.
The canula is used to suck the fat deposits from the area being targeted. Other surgeons prefer to use a device called ultrasonic probe, which breaks down the fats into manageable pieces for faster suction. External ultrasonic liposuction is actually quite popular because it makes the process a whole lot easier and unlike with the previous alternative of an internal ultrasonic liposuction method, it is also much safer.
Yet despite the fact that liposuction is already an established surgical procedure and is considered to be only a minor surgery, it is not without risks as all surgical procedures are.

1. Burns
One of the most common complaints and complications of liposuction is the possibility of burning the skin. This is especially true with patients who will undergo an internal ultrasonic liposuction, which involves the insertion of a device through the skin. When improperly handled, the device can overheat or touch too much of the skin layers. This can cause burn marks on the skin that may lead to scarring
2. Embolism
Another complication that may arise with the procedure is embolism. This happens when fats that are being suctioned flow through a ruptured blood stream. Although this alone is not dangerous, trouble will arise when the fat deposits travel to certain organs of the body such as the lungs and become lodged. Some fat deposits can even reach the brain. Resulting condition such as pulmonary emboli may lead to disability and even death.

Remember that liposuction involves the insertion of an instrument such as a canula. Most of the times damage to the organs happen because basically, the surgeon cannot actually see where he is heading with the canula. He will only have to rely on his previous experience with other patients and of course his instict as a doctor. Unlike with other surgery where the skin will be completely opened, liposuction only involves a small cut. From that, the surgeon must be able to estimate or visualize the insides of the part being targeted.
4. Paresthesia
Another complication that may arise from liposuction procedure is a condition called paresthesia. This is characterized by a sudden loss in sensation in the area where the liposuction is done. There are cases also when sensations can still be felt. However, it may be extremely painful or extremely numb.
Because of the use of anesthesia, paresthesia is actually normal after a surgery. Alarm bells should however ring if the condition does not disappear after several weeks. If this happens, it is good to go immediately to a doctor for examination. Paresthesia can become permanent if not taken cared of immediately.
